Obviously, any response to such questions must be conditional, subject to definitions of the terms themselves as well as to the specific circumstances under which the questions are answered. For this reason, there is a need to understand the extent to which the biased treatment of women may be legitimately compared to that of blacks.

Many of the women talked about having to code-switch, or embrace the dominant culture at work. Zero of the women interviewed regularly worked with other women of color. A few years ago I started attending classes for my part-time MBA. This lack of female leadership is important to explore, but what are the experiences of black women in the workplace before they make it to the c-suite? I wanted to find out how other black women navigate the intertwined barriers at the intersection of race and gender. Over the course of a year I worked with Professor Elizabeth Morrison, Vice Dean of Faculty at NYU, to interview 10 women of color in order to understand the challenges they face in the workplace, how they cope with those challenges, and how those coping mechanisms affect their chances of long-term success. A lot of women told me that they code-switched , which involves embracing the dominant culture or vernacular among certain groups like co-workers, for example and switching to a more authentic self when around friends and family.

This year, Black women will have to work well into the month of August to catch up to the wages that white men earned in alone. In concrete terms, this means that Black women experience a pay gap every day—and this gap adds up. The earnings chasm between Black women and white men is not new. It requires developing a deeper understanding of the different factors driving the wage gap for Black women, some of which consistently devalue their experiences and work and limit their future opportunities.
Black feminism holds that the experience of Black women gives rise to a particular understanding of their position in relation to sexism , class oppression, and racism. Crenshaw argued that each concept—being Black and being female—should be considered independently while understanding that intersecting identities compound upon and reinforce one another. A Black feminist lens in the United States was first employed by Black women to make sense of how white supremacy and patriarchy interacted to inform the particular experiences of enslaved Black women.
